Permanent Siltation Monitoring
Sediment build-up or scouring can cause rapid changes in the bottom of lakes and rivers, and can cause severe problems for the operation of hydro-electric dams, water utility plants and cooling water inlets. These bottom changes can be monitored using sonar systems fixed to boats, but repeating these surveys often enough to understand the changes can be expensive and inconvenient. To help solve this problem, ITER Systems has developed Bathyswath-PSM, a sonar system that is fixed to the dam wall and automatically scans the lake bottom at regular intervals. It autonomously processes the data and creates a report file, which it emails to interested personnel.
